Tulip fields in Holland: Our tips

Tulip fields in Holland: Our tips

At the end of March, the time will be here again. Step by step, the fields in the Netherlands are transformed into a veritable carpet of flowers. White and yellow daffodils, beguilingly fragrant hyacinths and tulips in all colours and varieties transform the landscape into the most beautiful rainbow. Every year, many tulip fans make a pilgrimage to the Bollenstreek, the internationally best-known tulip-growing area in the Netherlands. This is located around the Keukenhof, the largest tulip garden in the world in Lisse, where 7 million bulbs are arranged into artistic beds every year.

What many people don't know is that the largest continuous bulb-growing area in the world, which is located north of Amsterdam, is an interesting and varied holiday destination. Besides vast tulip fields, you will also find an unspoilt dune landscape grazed by highland cattle and Konik horses, as well as fine sandy beaches. On the island of Texel, fields of flowers lie next to pastures where sheep graze with their newborn lambs.

Below you will find our tips for your visit to the tulip fields in Holland:

Tulpen Keukenhof

Tulip fields in Holland - Starting point Uitgeest

Holiday Park de Hoop, with its holiday flats and glamping tents on Lake Uitgeestermeer, is only a 15-minute drive from Limmen. Around Limmen you can admire magnificent tulip fields that stretch all the way to the dunes near Castricum and Bakkum. At the end of April, the Bloemendagen Limmen (Flower Days) take place with impressive flower mosaics and in the Hortus Bulborum you will find up to 4000 different old varieties of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.

A nice day out is a tour with an e-chopper or rental bike, which can be rented at Holiday Park de Hoop. Ride towards Limmen (24 minutes), admire the flower fields and ride through the dunes to the beach in Castricum aan Zee (another 30 minutes). There, some beach pavilions invite you to have a snack before returning after a walk on the beach.

The world-famous Keukenhof tulip garden in Lisse is only a 30-minute drive from Holiday Park de Hoop. The pretty town of Haarlem, where the annual flower parade, the Bloemencorso, ends, is only 20 minutes away by car.

Tulip fields in Holland - Starting point Schoorl

North of Schoorl lies the largest continuous bulb-growing area in the world in Kop van Noord-Holland. From Park Duynvallei you can reach the colourful fields that start at Petten in just a few minutes by bike or car. But you can also easily explore the tulip fields from Park Duynvoet, Park Weideduyn and Villapark Mooi Schoorl.

A worthwhile destination for the whole family is Het Land van Fluwel, an adventure park that focuses intensively on the theme of tulips during the tulip season and is located between the tulip fields. During the Bloemendagen in Anna Paulowna you can marvel at more than 100 artistic flower mosaics. A special experience is the Bloeiend Zijpe walking day and the Bloeiend Zijpe cycling tour. For one day each, 50 flower bulb growers around 't Zand open their fields and you have the unique opportunity to walk or cycle directly through the fields. A great experience! If you miss the Bloeiend Zijpe walking and cycling days, you can always go for a walk or cycle ride through the tulip fields on your own.

Tulip fields in Holland - Starting point Texel

What makes spring so special on Texel are not only the flowering tulip fields, but also the newborn little lambs happily jumping over the pastures. A special 35 km lambing cycle route is available from the VVV Tourist Information Office and at Schapenboerderij Texel you can cuddle with the little lambs.

The luxurious villas in Park Duynzoom are ideally situated for long walks in the dunes and along the beach, but also for extensive cycling tours across the island. Most of the tulip and flower fields are around Den Hoorn and in the Eierlandpolder in the north of the island and can be admired via one of the two tulip bike tours.
