Surroundings

Above the Frisian mainland lies possibly the most beautiful Wadden Island: Ameland! A delightful holiday destination for young and old. It takes about 50 minutes by ferry from Holwerd. You can take your car on the boat or leave it in the parking lot in Holwerd. On Ameland, cycling is a great way to get around. Electric and regular bicycles are available for rent at various locations on the island.

Breathtaking nature

Ameland offers unspoiled nature with forests, dunes, beautiful sandy beaches, charming villages, and a lively nightlife. The island is a great destination in every season to truly get away. In autumn, you can enjoy the last warm rays of sun, and the stormy days are also thrilling and spectacular. In winter, there is no better place to take a refreshing walk and feel the wind in your hair. You can take long beach walks and then cozy up by the gas fireplace in your lovely holiday villa. Spring is beautiful with lambs frolicking among flowers and fresh greenery, and everywhere you feel the energy of nature awakening. And when it comes to summer, we can simply say: pure enjoyment!

The holiday villas are located on a dead-end lane with eight holiday homes. Three of them are offered by Dutchen. The nearest village, Ballum, has a small supermarket. In the village of Hollum, further away, you will find a larger supermarket, as well as in the village of Nes. The island has a total population of about 3,500 residents across its four villages. Each village has its own charm, with restaurants, shops, and beach clubs. If you're looking for some cooling off in the summer months, there is an outdoor swimming pool near the villas. And, of course, the sea is nearby. You can find an indoor swimming pool with a large slide in the village of Buren.

Beaches on Ameland

Ameland boasts wonderful sandy beaches along the entire North Sea coast. There is so much space that it never feels overcrowded. From your holiday villa, it's just a one-kilometer walk to the Ballum beach. Here, you'll find beautiful nature with many shorebirds. Make sure to visit Het Groene Strand, a unique natural phenomenon where, due to sea currents, a piece of natural beach with diverse vegetation has formed over the past 30 years. The beach in Nes is close to the ferry terminal. During the summer, it attracts many day visitors and can be a bit busier. There is a beach pavilion and a restaurant. From the beautiful beach in Hollum, you have a view of the island of Terschelling. All beaches have free parking facilities.

Please note that due to currents, it is dangerous to swim in the sea outside the supervised bathing areas and designated times. If you're bringing your dog on vacation, it's good to know that dogs must be leashed on the bathing beaches from March 15th to September 15th.

Ballum

The nearest village is Ballum. This small and peaceful village has only 370 residents. The many 18th-century houses are reminders of its agricultural past. Ballum has a cozy center with a supermarket and a few restaurants, such as the family restaurant De Boerderij. Near Ballum, there is a small airfield where you can take a scenic flight over Ameland or go skydiving (Sightseeing flight: Dutch site) during the summer months. It's a unique experience.

Nes

This is the place where you arrive with the ferry and it's always bustling with activity. It's a charming village with beautiful old houses, lovely shops, and restaurants. In the summer months, a weekly market is held here.

Hollum

The largest village on the island, cozy and filled with monumental houses. There are charming shops and restaurants. If you want to learn more about the history of Ameland, Hollum is the place to be. Don't forget to visit the lighthouse. It's a bit of a climb, but the view over the entire island is spectacular.

Buren

The easternmost village of Ameland. In this picturesque village, you'll find restaurants, cafes, and a supermarket. Buren hosts the annual Midsummer Festival.

Nature reserves Het Oerd and De Hon

These nature reserves are definitely worth exploring. From the villa, you can take beautiful bike or hiking trips to Het Oerd and De Hon. Het Oerd is a large dune area with high dunes and moist dune valleys. The view from the high dunes is breathtaking. Het Oerd is located at the eastern tip of Ameland.
