Daytrip to Schiermonnikoog: our tips

Schiermonnikoog dorp

Want a day of complete relaxation in peaceful surroundings, in the middle of nature? Baayvilla's is only a few minutes away from the ferry in the harbour of Lauwersoog, which will take you to the Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog in about 45 minutes. Visitors are not allowed to bring a car which makes it nice and quiet. Schiermonnikoog also has the lowest population density of all municipalities in the Netherlands and boasts the widest sandy beaches in all of Europe: Schier is the place to be.

At Baayvilla's you sleep in walking distance to the ferry. Rent a bicycle at arrival on Schiermonnikoog and cycle towards the (only) village for a cup of coffee at hotel Van der Werff. A cup of coffee here - just like in the old days - costs just €0.80. The history of this legendary hotel dates back to 1726 and it seems like nothing has changed about the interior for a very long time. And it actually has.

From Van der Werff, walk around the village followed by a short bike ride to the beach on the west side of the island. These are the largest beaches in Europe. Even on the busiest summer days, there is more than enough space here for activities such as blokarting. Prefer peace and quietness? No problem, plenty of space. At the beach pavilion Noderstraun (Schiermonnikoog dialect for Northern beach) you can enjoy a delicious lunch.

History - and drinks

The island was occupied during World War II and to get a taste of that history, you can visit the bunker museum. The small museum gives a nice impression of life on the island during the war. A little further on is the Wassermann bunker. It is freely accessible and can be visited.

The bunker museum is close to the island's flagship restaurant: De Marlijn. This pavilion has a lovely terrace where you can spend hours drinking and dining. The beer, whisky and wine menus are very extensive and the drinks menu is definitely worthwhile. A lot of regional products are used, making the dishes deliciously fresh.

Cycling on towards the village and the ferry, you pass the Berkenplas. The ideal place for children to take a dip in the small lake, while you enjoy a snack and a drink.

Then it's about 10 minutes of cycling before you are back - completely relaxed - at the ferry!
